About Me
I am Dr. Ever Josue Figueroa an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
My research interests focus on media representations, media sociology, sports communication, and journalism studies. I mostly specialize in qualitative methods, including textual analysis, critical discourse analysis, ethnography and in-depth interviewing. His peer-reviewed journal articles have been published in New Media & Society, Journalism, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, Howard Journal of Communications, Communication & Sport and Critical Studies in Media Communication.
My research agenda is broadly aligned within critical cultural studies and media sociology. I seek to answer questions that uncover the complex sociological dynamics of news production as well as the ideological and symbolic meaning that is embedded within news content. In terms of more specific research topics, I have primarily focused on two key areas: hegemonic masculinity and racialed discourses in sports media and the sociological dynamics of labor unions in journalism. Essentially, I study how ideological power manifests and is transmitted through journalism’s various sociological fields. Moving forward, I plan on studying how athletic labor is represented in sports media through the lens of race, gender and class.
I received all my degrees, BA., MA. and PhD, in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. I’m also a lifetime member of Kappa Tau Alpha, an honor society for journalism and mass communication. Currently, I serve as the Research Chair for the AEJMC Sports Interest Group and previously served as the PF&R chair for the same division.
